Standards

In December 1999, PROAOA developed the Safety Standards for the Alberta White Water Industry. These standards were updated in 2019 and aligned with the Canadian federal Special-purpose Vessels Regulations and the British Columbia River Outfitters Association standards.

PROAOA Standards ensure that member companies meet the following criteria:

  • Tours are conducted by certified, qualified guides.

  • Industry-standard equipment and information is provided to participants.

  • Operating practices of the company meet or exceed industry standards.

Canadian Regulations

Commercial river outfitters who are guiding trips on class 3 or above waters in Canada are governed by the Canadian Special-purpose Vessels Regulations, which are part of the Canada Shipping Act. These regulations apply to Canadian vessels that are inflatable and carry persons on an excursion in Canadian waters for remuneration.

WHAT EQUIPMENT MUST PARTICIPANTS WEAR?

Every person on a trip must be provided with a properly-sized Type V white water PFD that is in good condition. Everyone must also have a helmet, unless in waters where there are no rocks or other hard objects. Wetsuits must be worn when the water temperature is less than 15° C.

WHAT CERTIFICATIONS DO GUIDES NEED?

Guides must be 18, and have first aid. However, PROAOA guides also must have Swiftwater Rescue Certification and trip leaders usually have at least Wilderness First Aid.

WHAT ELSE IS REQUIRED?
